Gynecomastia

Common condition that causes men's breasts to swell and become larger than normal

Gynecomastia (sometimes referred to as "man boobs") is a common condition that causes men's breasts to swell and become larger than normal. It is most common in teenage boys and older men.

Length Of Operation: 2 hour

Going Back To Normal Life: 1-2 week

Full Recovery: 1-2 month

What causes gynecomastia?

An imbalance between estrogen and androgen hormones typically causes gynecomastia. Men’s bodies usually produce small amounts of estrogen, the hormone that controls breast growth. If your body produces too much estrogen, or you have low testosterone (hypogonadism), your breasts may enlarge. Sometimes people with obesity develop enlarged breasts due to excess fatty tissue. This condition is known as pseudo gynecomastia

What is gynecomastia surgery?

Gynecomastia surgery reduces breast size in men, flattening and enhancing the chest contours.

In severe cases of gynecomastia, the weight of excess breast tissue may cause the breasts to sag and stretch the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple). In these cases, the position and size of the areola can be surgically improved, and excess skin may be reduced. Plastic surgery to correct gynecomastia is technically called reduction mammaplasty.

Post-procedure care after gynecomastia surgery:

You may feel pain in the operation area after gynecomastia surgery. This can be eliminated with the medications that is prescribed after the surgery. Swelling and bruises can be observed for 1 week after the surgery. This situation should not worry you. A full recovery may take a week and the results of the surgery can be observed within about 3 months. After the surgery, you should protect your chest area from physical effects, excessive strain, and heavy working conditions.

Does gynecomastia surgery leave scars?

As with any surgical operation, scars may not disappear after gynecomastia surgery. However, the scar left after gynecomastia surgery is too small to be seen or noticed.

*Sutures are removed within 1 to 2 weeks after surgery. If you think you have a problem during this time, you should contact your doctor. The person should refrain from sexual activity for a week after gynecomastia surgery.
